Welcome to the Master Park website
As one of the few recreation parks in the area, Master Park is a much-loved and much-talked about asset for the community. Long-established residents of Oxted will know that in 1923 Charles Hoskins Master left Master Park in trust “ for the recreation and amusement of the Parish of Oxted and their friends ”. The Park has retained its character and purpose in the intervening 85 years.
It is not run or funded by the local Council nor was it bestowed with an endowment when left to the community. As a consequence the Park has to raise its own funds from Park users, members of the public and other donors.
The costs of maintaining the Park have been outstripping the Park's income for several years and reserves are now seriously depleted. The major drain has been the increasing cost of clearing litter from the Park which, in the height of summer, has to be done twice a day.
The Management Committee is hoping to secure a larger and more regular income for the Park by increasing the membership of “The Friends of Master Park”.
We are appealing, in particular, to parents of young children who use and enjoy the popular children's playground perhaps without realising that it was made possible in 1999 only because of the generosity of local people, businesses and organisations. The Playground is now due for extensive repairs to combat general wear and tear, testimony to its high level of use.
Our fundraising efforts had the backing of our local MP, Mr Peter Ainsworth.
Peter Ainsworth said “ I wholeheartedly support the Master Park campaign. I would love to see local people doing whatever they can to maintain this invaluable recreational facility. Playing fields and playgrounds are a vital part of any community and I urge people to make a donation and befriend their MP .”
